Emo alert!

This has been a bad week (mostly explained by the presence of one irritatingly arrogant French person). Also, I've been at my site for 4 1/2 weeks now and I'm fed up with it, with this whole PC experience. It turns out that the country director's challenge to stay at site is worthy of a prize or a treat. I'm thinking a one-way ticket home right now, but a trip to Dakar will have to suffice. Next week is Thanksgiving - my favorite holiday ever - and I don't get to spend it with my family. Instead I'll be going with some other volunteers to celebrate the holiday at the Ambassador's house. Better than nothing, of course; but I'd forgotten how depressing it is to spend this one away from home. [Flashback to France, Nov. 2006 and me eating a slab of slimy deli-style turkey, alone. It was probably raining, too.] Still, there will be good food (American food), friends from my stage, hopefully some alcohol, and plenty of English. For now, I guess that'll have to do.

A few notes:

Laura, thanks for the blog love!! It's lovely having your enthusiasm to put me straight once in awhile!
Ang, yes, use the Fimela address down below. I've already received 2 pkg notifications, which I'll try to go turn in tomorrow! As far as other mail info, go back to that first or second email/post to see some suggestions.
Alaina, no, no, I swear I'm not judging you on this one. I try to keep foreign words in italics; madeup ones like ¨shitton¨I will leave in regular font to keep you guessing. Puzzles are good for the brain.

  1. Ahh, yes, the infamous Depressing Thanksgiving of 2006. If only we had been friends at that point, we could've had a good time! I don't even remember what I did for Thanksgiving that year -- but I, like you, am sure it was raining.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear that things are still emo and you're having a rough time adjusting to Monsieur Arrogance. You're almost at the 5-week mark, though! And just think how cool it will be to have Thanksgiving dinner at the ambassador's fancy digs! I'm eager to see those pictures!

By the way, I saw as a response to a comment in your previous post that you have two packages awaiting. Go get them. They'll put some bounce in your step.

    Love you!

  2. Sorry we didn't get back to you earlier today regarding the Rice Vs Pasta. I'm sure Eema will find the answer. My sense is that when one is not sure, the best solution is to eat BOTH!!! Love Aba

  3. A little bit of tailoring, a spoonful of PJ, a river width away from Monsieur AND 2 packages full of surprises will make for a very good day.
Thanksgiving will not be complete without you BUT we will make up for it, BIG TIME, upon your return!
    Enjoy your days in Dakar!
Neshikot, chibuk gadol and lots of love...
p.s. food bible questions should be SMS to me!

  4. What is going on with this French dude? Should I travel there and smack him right in his arrogant mouth? I'll do it. I will create an international incident! Next time he's a jerk remind him that his president is a tiny, tiny man, and ours is a suave, cool guy. I know that's like saying "My dad can beat up your dad," but it's still worth something.

I'm sorry you are feeling bummed about Thanksgiving, but I know the trip to the ambassador's house will be cool. I want to hear all about it. As for me, my mom volunteered my house for the holiday, invited a bunch of people, and is making me cook one of the turkeys (which I don't really know how to do). My dad is also going to deep fry a turkey in my backyard. Fingers crossed he doesn't set my house on fire. Seriously. Cross. Your. Fingers. Also, even though the holiday is at my house, my mom is still stressing out - calm down, woman!

Do not buy a one-way ticket home. How, then, will I come visit you? (Yes, I'm seriously considering it, if I can get the time off from work!) Instead, do your best to scheme up ways to undermine the French jerkface. I will even help you.

I must go baste the turkey I am cooking. I miss you oh so much, my friend!
